Shot in CDO (Gusa Arena) and directed by Gang Badoy, this public service ad is part of the RETHINK campaign of ROCK ED PHILIPPINES for the coming 2010 elections. www.sinongmasokey.org

The family of the slain peasant leader Ka Rene Peñas takes this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who helped and donated during Unsilent Night – our fundraising gig for his daughter’s tuition. As a barangay kagawad, his daughter’s tuition was covered by the state. When he was shot on June 5, 2009, that benefit was revoked. Though we’d love to give him justice, we’re happy with just assisting with his daugher’s tuition.

Using all means to be heard, peasant leader Rene Penas jumped into the Manila Bay while we were talking by the wall…. he jumped in so he can say his piece. Us, boring folks (me esp) just watched in awe at the tenacity of this man. We should all be so brave. Ka Rene was gunned down on the evening of the 5th of June on his way home in Sumilao. Less than a week after the CARP -Extension Law was passed in Congress. I guess some landed people wanted to remind the farmers of their power. And that is my issue. -Gang

Unedited conversation on Ka Rene Penas. Shot 8 June 2009, 2am. (Yoyong and Dodong, both of the Sumilao Farmers’ Group tell me what they remember most about their slain leader Ka Rene.)

Three days after Sumilao farmer-leader Ka Rene Penas was shot I had the opportunity to ask two of his constant companions (Yoyong and Dodong- also farmers) to tell me more about this great man. (unedited, shot June 8 2009 – 1am)

By Erwin Romulo: BELOW IS THE EMAIL I SENT TO ALEXIS WHILE I WAS STILL WORKING AS AN EDITOR FOR ROGUE. IT’S A LITTLE PIECE BY MY FAVE WRITER WHO ALSO DIED THIS YEAR. I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD SPARK SOMETHING. THE SUBJECT OF THE EMAIL READ: “time for you to write a COLUMN for ROGUE” On [...] Continue Reading

Old Spice

Calling it his “last performance”, Joseph Ejercito Estrada announces his 2010 bid to regain the presidency but is it really all smoke and mirrors? Pauline Kael, famed New Yorker film critic, holding court in arch-liberal Manhattan shortly after the 1972 U.S. presidential elections where the darling of progressives, Democrat George McGovern, went down in record-setting defeat [...] Continue Reading

Portrait of the Filipino Artist as a Piece of Shit (A Review Somewhat of Louie Cordero’s Nardong Tae)

Posted on 04 November 2009

THE subtitle of the comic book declares its intent clearly enough. It’s a satire, yes—a parody of the overlong titles of Pinoy action films, their slapstick counterparts and the massacre cinema of Carlo J. Caparas. It’s also an homage to the komiks that gave us local heroes like Captain Barbell, Darna and also Caparas’s Panday. [...] Continue Reading

Sunday School Lesson

Posted on 04 November 2009

It would be a cliché to observe that it all played out like a movie crime cliché. The armed robbers were costumed as cops, and by virtue of their badge they marched into a plush mall whose shops catered well beyond most civil servants’ paygrades. They stopped at a retail store which sold watches that [...] Continue Reading

5 Creatively Influential Album Covers

Posted on 27 July 2009

Album packaging design is fast becoming a dying art now that acquiring music is just a mouse-click away. And as someone who used to design cd sleeves for a living, this saddens me because back in the day, eye-catching covers played a huge role in making sure that records are noticed and eventually purchased. I [...] Continue Reading

Cannes, But Don’t Have To

Acknowledging a Recognition vs. Appreciating an Achievement John Berger, in his acceptance speech upon receiving the Booker Prize for his novel ‘G’ in 1972, spoke of the meaning of prizes: “Since you have awarded me this prize, you may like to know, briefly, what it means to me. The competitiveness of prizes I find distasteful. And [...] Continue Reading
